First Night Community Quilt on display February 24 and 25
One of the activities that made this year's First Night
celebration a success was the Community Quilt project, designed by quilt artist and
UCSC staff member Pele Fleming. Working at tables just off Pacific Avenue, participants
of all ages took house-shaped quilt pieces and created statements about their concept
of home with paint, fabric, beads, and glitter. The "houses" were then
tied together on the fence next to the work tables. The project was sponsored by
the William James Association. A permanent location for the completed quilt has yet
to be found, according to Fleming, but it will be on display at the Pajaro Valley
Quilt Association's annual quilt show February 24 and 25 at the Watsonville Fairgrounds.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

pies, and tarts for dessert. Beverages are also included. The cost is $11 per person
(cash, check, or recharge), and reservations must be made by 5 p.m. on February 13.

Sweet News: See's chocolates are back!
Help support the Women at Work Retreat Scholarship Fund
by purchasing See's chocolate bars in four delicious flavors. The W@W 2001 Steering
Committee is looking for volunteers to help with sales. It's easy--it sells itself;
it's fun-- people love you when you have chocolate; and it's for a great cause. If
you would like to be the bearer of good things to your work area, contact Judy Scarborough
at (831) 459-2697 or jscarbor@cats.ucsc.edu.
Change in procedures for Interlibrary Loan
The University Library is changing procedures for borrowing from UC Berkeley and
the Northern Regional Library Facility (NRLF). All loans from UCB and NRLF will be
handled through the Interlibrary Loan office the same way books are borrowed from
the other UC campuses. To complete the transition, the UCSC Library needs currently
loaned materials to be returned by March 2001. These are books with a "blue
strap" attached to the front binding. Materials with the "yellow strap"
(loaned under other ILL systems) are not affected. For more information, contact
Deborah Turner, head of access services, at (831) 459-5114.
Openings for noontime massages still available
The Holistic Program is offering lunch-break chair massages from some of the program's
top students at several campus locations. Massages are 20 minutes long, cost $10,
and will be offered on February 15 and 22 and March 8. For more information or to
reserve a spot, call (831) 459-2806.
Recreation Department offers class in wilderness first
aid
A class in Wilderness First Aid, taught by the staff
of the Wilderness Medicine Institute, will take place on Saturday and Sunday,
February 17 and 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Stevenson 175, Stevenson College. This
course is used by many organizations to introduce first aid and long-term patient
care to trip leaders, guides, and rescue team members. Topics include patient assessment,
shock, soft tissue injuries, fractures, dislocations, hypothermia, heat illness,
and altitude sickness. Emphasis is placed on principles of treatment and decision
making, not memorization of lists. Sign up in advance. Cost is $85 for UCSC students,
$120 for non-UCSC students. For more information, call (831) 459-2806.
Summer jobs for students at the Conference Office
The Conference and Summer Housing Office will begin recruiting for over 30
summer student jobs. A variety of positions are available, including leadership opportunities.
Students employed by the Conference Office gain real-life experiences by working
with worldwide conference guests during the summer quarter. Look for the logo "GOT
WORK?" on posters around campus. For more information, call (831) 459-2611.
