May 19, 2003 UCSC in the News Assistant professor of philosophy Alva Noë was the featured guest on a half-hour radio program for Australias Radio National, discussing his recent article, "Is the Visual World a Grand Illusion?" Daniel Costa, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, was
featured in a Boston Globe article about the Tagging of Pacific
Pelagics (TOPP) program, an ambitious project to equip ocean-going animals
with electronic tags to gather detailed oceanographic data and document
the animals' migratory habits. Costa oversees the seabird and marine mammal
components of TOPP, which includes research on 20 species of whales, seals,
birds, sharks, tunas, sea turtles, and large squid.
The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported on a Fulbright-Hays research
grant awarded to Elisabeth Cameron, assistant professor of art
history, that will enable her to study African culture in Zambia. Garth Illingworth, professor of astronomy and astrophysics, was
quoted in a Washington Times story about how the temporary grounding
of the space shuttle fleet is affecting previously scheduled maintenance
of the Hubble Space Telescope. UCSC tennis coach Bob Hansen and the program he has built were profiled in the sports section of the Santa Cruz Sentinel prior to the NCAA Division III national championships at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota. UCSC's number one ranking in space sciences in a recent survey of top
universities received print and broadcast news coverage. Stan Woosley,
professor and chair of astronomy and astrophysics, was quoted in the Santa
Cruz Sentinel, and Burt Jones, professor of astronomy and astrophysics
and assistant director of Lick Observatory, was interviewed by KION TV. |
