Armin Mester

Armin Mester, professor of linguistics, has been awarded a ten-month research fellowship with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Japanese equivalent of the National Science Foundation. Mester's fellowship takes place in 2001 and covers travel, stipend, and research support.

Scott Loosley

Senior grounds supervisor Scott Loosly was asked to respond to a reader's query for a Q&A column in the February 2000 issue of Fine Gardening magazine. Loosley, a certified arborist, advised the reader on how to prune a Mt. Fuji cherry tree. Before he came to UCSC, Loosley worked at the Gamble Gardens in Palo Alto and wrote a Q&A column for the Palo Alto Weekly.

Design awards for new theater and studio spaces

UCSC's new theater and studio spaces received design awards from the American Institute of Architects' Portland chapter. BOORA Architects of Portland were recognized for their design of the project. The buildings, which were completed last year, were designed to provide continuity in styles and to enhance spatial and programmatic relationships between the original Peforming Arts complex and the Baskin Visual Arts complex. Among the new facililties are additional art studios, a 391-seat film and video lecture hall, and an experimental theater.
