Fish Rap Live! wins Gold Circle Awards

Fish Rap Live! garnered two 2002 Gold Circle Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Jason Louv and Marc Fortuna won third place in the "General or Humor Column" for their entry titled "They Say It's Your Birthday," and Jake Rodkin won third place in the ad design category for an ad titled "Fish Rap Gets Out Stains." The association judges more than 10,000 individual entries in its annual Gold Circle Awards for student journalists. More than 500 college students and 500 high school students receive awards in 77 categories of this competition, which originated in 1984.

UCSC receives "Educators of Distinction" award

UC Santa Cruz recently received a 2002 Educators of Distinction award from Saludos Hispanos/Saludos.com, a popular career and education web site and magazine for bilingual Hispanics. The awards are given to institutions that have demonstrated a commitment to success in higher education for Hispanics.

"Education is the key to success for Hispanics," said Rosemarie Garcia-Solomon, publisher of Saludos Hispanos. "We congratulate these institutions that are leading the way, providing high standards of education, career planning, and counseling to Hispanic students."

Saludos Hispanos was established 30 years ago to increase opportunities for Hispanics through education and career development. Its web site was selected as the "Best of the Best" among 4,000 sites reviewed in 2001 by CareerXroads, a guide to what is online for recruiters and job seekers.

UCSC web site selected as "Site of the Week"

The UCSC web site was selected Site of the Week for the week of May 13 by EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. EDUCAUSE showcases sites that are well-designed, visually appealing, and easy to use.

Bruce Levine to serve on Lincoln Bicentennial Commission

History professor Bruce Levine has been appointed to the Advisory Committee of the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission. The Commission was created by Congress and charged with advising the U.S. Government on ways to honor Lincoln during the bicentennial of his birth in 2009.

Terry Burke chosen to give public lecture at University of Arizona

Edmund (Terry) Burke delivered the Tenth Annual Sabbagh Public Lecture at the University of Arizona, Tucson, in February. Sponsored by the Anthropology Department, the lecture topic was "Itineraries in the Arab Mediterranean Before Colonialism: The Adventures of Ali bin Uthman, Mamluk of Napoleon."
