Global warming expert will give public lecture on Thursday, May 24

Stephen Schneider, a professor of biological sciences at Stanford University and a leading authority on climate change, will give a free public lecture on Thursday, May 24, at 8 p.m. in Classroom Unit 2. Schneider's lecture, sponsored by the UCSC chapter of the scientific research society Sigma Xi, is titled "Global Warming: Separating the scientific signal from the political noise."

Schneider has done pioneering work in the fields of atmospheric science and global climatology, including the relationship of biological systems to global climate change. He is the editor of Climatic Change, an interdisciplinary journal founded in 1975. His many honors and awards include a MacArthur Prize Fellowship. His books include Laboratory Earth: The Planetary Gamble We Can't Afford to Lose (Basic Books, 1996) and Global Warming: Are We Entering the Greenhouse Century? (Vintage Books, 1990). Schneider also edited the Encyclopedia of Climate and Weather (Oxford University Press, 1996).

Campus police targeting seat belt violations

As part of a nationwide effort to increase the use of seat belts by children in vehicles, the campus police will be targeting seat belt violations and child passenger safety laws during the week of May 21-28. The Police Department will have extra patrols on during that week specifically looking for those cars that do not have their children properly restrained.

College Nine Open House May 25

College Nine, the first new college at UCSC in 28 years, will celebrate its first year with an open house on Friday, May 25, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. in the Community Room. There'll be live music, refreshments, guest speakers, and an opportunity to learn about the college's focus on international and global perspectives.

Alumni Association invites nominations for awards

Every year, the UCSC Alumni Association makes awards to outstanding faculty, staff, and alumni. At a luncheon in their honor, recipients are given a $500 cash award. To find out more about the awards, including a list of past recipients, go to the Alumni Association Awards web page. To make an award nomination, fill out the form on the web or contact the Alumni Association at alumni@cats.ucsc.edu. The deadline for submitting nominations in May 25.

Fraternity raises money for rape prevention

On Friday May 4, seniors Christopher Rodgers, far right, and Aaron Villalobos teeter-tottered at the start of an annual event held by Theta Chi fraternity. The weekend teeter-totter marathon raised $700 for rape-prevention efforts on campus.

KZSC Spring Pledge Drive under way

Commercial-free, student radio KZSC 88.1 FM is holding its spring pledge drive May 9-22. KZSC offers a wide variety of shows ranging from public affairs and news to jazz, world beat, rock, and hip-hop. Step up and support KUSP during the spring pledge drive.

Join the Staff Advisory Board

Would you like to help advise the chancellor on staff issues? Plan staff appreciation activities? Here's your chance. There will be two openings on the 12-member Staff Advisory Board beginning July 1. All nonrepresented career staff employees are eligible. Information sessions for assistant professors

Academic Human Resources will hold information sessions for assistant professors on Wednesday, May 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. in 325 McHenry Library, and Thursday, May 24, from 10 a.m. to noon in 325 McHenry Library (you only need to attend one session). These sessions are intended to help assistant professors understand some of the policies and procedures in academic personnel reviews. UC-affiliated American University of Armenia seeks vice president and dean of faculty

The American University of Armenia (AUA), a UC-affiliated institution providing graduate education programs in the former Soviet republic, is seeking candidates for the position of vice president and dean of faculty. Established in 1991, AUA is an independent, privately endowed American institution. The language of instruction is English. The position is located in Armenia and begins January 1, 2002. The salary is competitive and commensurate with experience, and benefits include housing and round-trip travel.
