The award citation for Karplus cites his lifelong personal commitment to alternative transportation and numerous contributions to improving bicycling for Santa Cruz county residents. Karplus recently retired from the SCCRTC's Bicycle Committee after serving for more than 15 years. The citation for Scott said, "Through his initiative in conceiving of and developing a 'bike shuttle' to UCSC, Wes Scott has single-handedly solved one of the most daunting challenges to UCSC bicycle commuters. He eliminated the hill climb that has dissuaded many would-be riders." The Bike Shuttle, started in spring 2000, now carries upwards of 100 bikes and their riders each day.
Literature professor Nathaniel Mackey has been elected to the Board of Chancellors of the Academy of American Poets. His most recent poetry collections include Whatsaid Serif (City Lights Books, 1998) and Song of the Andoumboulou: 18-20 (1994). His first book, Eroding Witness was selected for the National Poetry Open Series Competition in 1984. His prose works include Atet, A.D. (2001); Djbot Baghostus's Run (1993); and Bedouin Hornbook (1986). He is also co-editor of American Poetry: The Twentieth Century (2000, with Carolyn Kizer, John Hollander, Robert Haas, and Marjorie Perloff), Moment's Notice: Jazz in Poetry and Prose (1993, with Art Lange), and the journal Hambone. Nobuho NagasawaArts professor Nobuho Nagasawa has won a national competition to design city hall,
and public plaza artwork in Austin, Texas. Nagasawa will work in collaboration with
internationally renown architect Antoine Predock. Predock is responsible for the
design of UCSC's Music Center Recital Hall. |
