In Memoriam

Jessica Roy

Jessica L. Roy, a graduate student in sociology, died August 27 in a car accident in Nairobi, Kenya, where she was conducting thesis research. She was 28.

Jessica attended Davidson College, where she earned a B.A. in French and was very involved in community service activities, including tutoring Native American children, volunteering at an orphanage in Haiti, and supplying medicine and providing medical support in Cameroon. During her last year at Davidson, she traveled to Kenya as a student at the School for Field Studies.

At UCSC, Jessica worked closely with sociology professor Ben Crow on issues related to water resources, especially access to clean water.

The Sociology Department is planning a memorial service to commemorate her life and work.

An obituary ran in Jessica's hometown newspaper in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
