UCSC awarded $5 million grant for genome research

A $5 million grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute will fund UCSC's part in a major project to better understand how the human genome works. Under the grant, a team led by James Kent, associate research scientist at UCSC's Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering, will establish a Data Coordination Center for the project. UCSC's role is to be "good librarians for the data--somewhere between a resource library and Google," according to Kent. [More]

Young ukulele master to be final note in concert series

The summer concert series at the Arboretum concludes on October 18 with Jake Shimabukuro, one of the world's top ukulele musicians. Shimabukuro, who views the ukulele as an untapped musical source, plays jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, flamenco, and rock in his mission to show that the instrument is capable of much more than traditional Hawaiian music.
