Mark Mitchell, a graduate student in bioinformatics, died unexpectedly
on Sunday, September 3. He was 43.
Mitchell was a valued member of the bioinformatics research
group led by David Haussler, professor of biomolecular engineering.
He held a B.S. in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley and
had worked in industry for more than a decade before returning
to school. He earned a B.S. in computer science and mathematics
at San Jose State University before beginning graduate studies
at UCSC in 2005 with support from a National Institutes of Health
