$2.7 million grant to fund stem cell research at UCSC

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine has approved a $2.7 million grant to fund a stem cell research facility at UCSC. The facility will be shared by UCSC researchers using human embryonic stem cells in efforts that may ultimately lead to new therapies for conditions ranging from Parkinson's disease to birth defects. More freshmen than expected say they plan to attend UCSC

About 4,200 freshmen--several hundred more than had been expected--have indicated they plan to enroll at UCSC in the fall.
