UCSC efforts to help victims of the South Asian tsunami and their families are being coordinated by a committee formed last week by Acting Chancellor Martin M. Chemers. 'Rags to riches’ story ends with generous bequest to UCSC

"If you’d met them, you’d never have thought they had any money,” said a family friend. But the late Federico and Rena Perlino, who operated a chicken-processing plant in Santa Cruz, bequeathed nearly $420,000 for UCSC graduate students in psychology working with deaf or hearing-impaired individuals.
