High
kicks and labor strife explored in new book
Dance
and labor were profoundly interrelated in 1930s America, writes theater
arts professor Mark Franko in his new book, The Work of Dance.
The book focuses on a time when the economy was stalled by depression,
political emotions ran strong, and the Federal Dance and Theater Projects
brought more Americans to dance both as performers and audience members.
There was also a parallel between dance and social activism, says Franko.
"The courage to strike did not differ greatly from the 'guts' required
to dance in front of an audience." (More)
