C. Dynes, right, a first-generation college graduate who went on to become
a distinguished physicist and chancellor of UC San Diego, was named the
18th president of the University of California system today (June 11)
by the UC Board of Regents. He succeeds Richard C. Atkinson, left, who
is retiring from the UC presidency after eight years that began Oct. 1,
