Steve Custer

Steve Custer, an engineer with the the UCSC Fire Department, died unexpectedly while off duty on January 5. He was 44.

Steve was a 15-year veteran of the Fire Department and was well liked by his colleagues. Chief Hernandez said he will be remembered as a hard worker and compassionate person who received a tremendous amount of pleasure from helping others. He also had a reputation as an inventive firehouse cook.

Steve was also a UCSC alumnus, graduating in 1987 from College Eight with a bachelor's degree in economics.

A private service is planned.

January 19 memorial service for Raymond Dasmann

A public memorial service for Raymond F. Dasmann, professor emeritus of environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will take place at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, in the College Eight Dining Hall at UCSC.

Dasmann, a founder of international environmentalism, died November 5 of pneumonia at the age of 83. The author of more than a dozen books, including The Destruction of California, Dasmann was at the forefront of international conservation efforts for more than 50 years.

The service will open with remarks by UCSC Chancellor M.R.C. Greenwood, who will be followed by Sylvia Earle, international leader of marine conservation efforts; Laurie Wayburn, president of Santa Rosa-based Pacific Forest Trust and founder and former president of the Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve; Huey Johnson, president of the Resource Renewal Institute in San Francisco, former secretary for natural resources of the State of California, and founder and former president of the Trust for Public Land; Kennan Ward, nature photographer; G. Carleton Ray, professor of coastal and marine ecology, conservation, and policy at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; Reginald Barrett, professor of wildlife management, UC Berkeley; and Gary Lease, professor and chair of history of consciousness at UCSC and former chair of environmental studies at UCSC. Music will be performed by Alisa Fineman and Kimball Hurd.

The memorial service is being cosponsored by the UCSC Environmental Studies Department, College Eight, the University Library's Regional History Project, and the Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve.
