Teaching, Learning, and Technology focus of web site

The UC Teaching, Learning & Technology Center has just launched an interactive web site that is both a news publication and information hub designed to spotlight innovations in educational technology and to foster communication and collaboration across the 10-campus UC system. The site includes monthly news and feature articles and links to educational technology resources. The latest issue includes coverage on the five projects and courses that received TLtC full-scale implementation grants in the 2000-01 fiscal year.

Volunteer training classes at the Arboretum

The UCSC Arboretum is offering a volunteer training class on Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon for six weeks, January 9 through February 13. The class is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the Arboretum's collections, gardening in our Mediterranean climate, and the role of public gardens in plant conservation. No experience is necessary. The class is free, but attendees are expected to buy a book: Plants of the World's Mediterranean Climates, by Peter Dallman (approximately $28). The majority of the time will be spent out in the gardens. The Arboretum's collections include extensive Australian, New Zealand, South African, and Californian gardens. The Arboretum staff hopes some who attend will become inspired to join their community of volunteers who greet visitors, repot plants, help with plant sales, and work in the gardens. The class will be held at the Horticulture Building. New members can preregister by calling (831) 427-2998, or just show up at the first class.

Those interested in leading tours can attend the Tour Guide Training class on February 20 and 27, led by Phyllis Norris and Stephen McCabe. Training is free. Call (831) 427-2998 for information or optional preregistration.

Researchers sought for career day presentations

If you are a researcher willing to spend part of a Saturday in early March describing your career to high school girls, then the planning committee for the UCSC Expanding Your Horizons career day wants you! The committee is looking for faculty, postdoc, and graduate student volunteers to organize workshops and presentations that show the variety of research careers in natural sciences, social sciences, and engineering--and, in particular, the excitement that draws people to devote their professional lives to research. The Expanding Your Horizons career day for high school girls will take place on Saturday, March 2; the deadline for submitting workshop ideas is Thursday, January 14. For more information, contact
Roberta Valdez, director of the UCSC Women's Center, rvaldez@cats.ucsc.edu.

First Night Santa Cruz volunteers sought

This New Year's Eve, for the sixth consecutive year, UCSC is the official First Night Santa Cruz Volunteer Sponsor. First Night is one of Santa Cruz County's most popular cultural events, drawing more than 30,000 people downtown to celebrate New Year's Eve at performances and arts activities with their families and friends. Six hundred volunteers are needed to make this event happen and the campus is encouraged to participate.

For a three- to four-hour commitment, volunteers receive a blinking admission button. Area and site managers and other volunteers who work more than eight hours on the day of the event will also receive a "Friends of First Night" shirt and an invitation to a thank-you party in January. The first 20 UC Santa Cruz staff, faculty, and students who volunteer for First Night will receive an additional free First Night button. For more information or to volunteer, call (831) 425-7277 or visit the First Night Santa Cruz web site and mention that you are with the campus for your additional free button.

Campus closure reminder

The winter campus closure begins Saturday, December 22, and continues through Tuesday, January 1. In all, the campus will be closed for 11 days: four days are scheduled holidays (December 24, 25, and 31 and January 1), four are weekend days, and three days are designated workdays. To cover these three workdays, full-time staff employees are required to use 24 hours of vacation, compensatory time off, or leave without pay. More information about campus closure policies may be found on the Staff Human Resources web site.

The campus community is reminded to turn off lights, shut down computers and other office equipment, and close exterior windows before leaving for the break.

Some campus offices will be open and essential services will be provided during the campus closure. For more information on facilities-related matters, contact Physical Plant at (831) 429-3447 (memo from Ilse Kolbus, acting director, Physical Plant).
