December 4, 2000 New FacultyAlexandra Minna Stern
Alexandra Stern comes to UCSC from the University of Michigan where she was associate director of the Historical Center for the Health Sciences. Her research focuses on the history of science, medicine, and the body in the Americas in the 19th and 20th centuries. She has published numerous articles including "Buildings, Boundaries, and Blood: Medicalization and Nation-Building on the U.S.-Mexico Border, 1910-1930," in the Hispanic American Historical Review, 79:1 (1999) which won the 1999 Berkshire Conference of Women Historians Article Prize. She earned her B.A. in Central American studies at San Francisco State University, an M.A. in Latin American studies at UC San Diego, and a Ph.D. in history at the University of Chicago. |
