Patricia Lara

Patricia Lara, who served the campus community for 18 years in the Financial Aid Office, died of cancer on July 7. She was 53.

Ms. Lara held a variety of important jobs during her many years in Financial Aid. Most recently, she worked as an adviser, helping students with special financial circumstances.

Ms. Lara, who was born in Los Angeles, married Frank Lara and the couple moved to San Jose in 1970. They later moved to Santa Cruz, where they raised a son, Timothy. Before coming to UCSC in 1982, she worked for the Live Oak School District, where she assisted with the children's horticultural program.

Touring gardens was one of Ms. Lara's greatest loves. She was a devoted mother and family member, loved to travel, enjoyed salsa dancing, and was an avid walker, among many other interests. She also took great pleasure in volunteering for Father Rene's community activities at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Santa Cruz.

She is survived by her son, Timothy Lara of San Francisco, and mother, Nellie Loya of Downey, California.

Contributions in Patricia Lara's name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
