As director, Hankamer will coordinate the administrative, programmatic,
and budgetary decisions of the IHR, providing leadership in support
of humanities research with a special emphasis on fundraising, and making
humanities research more available and visible to the public.
In addition to his 25-plus years of distinguished teaching and research
in linguistics, Hankamer has served in a variety of administrative,
graduate support, and research capacities at UCSC. A former dean of the
Humanities Division, he has also served as acting dean of Graduate Studies and Research,
as a member of the Graduate Council, and as a current member of the Committee on
Research and the IHR Steering Committee.
Hankamer will succeed professor of history Gail Hershatter, who will
complete her second term as IHR director at the end of June.
