Mike Abney, Michael McCawley and Doug Zuidema were honored for their efforts to help and comfort Osterbrock, who died without regaining consciousness. He was 82.

“It was good citizenship in the best traditions of our campus,” Blumenthal said in presenting certificates to Zuidema, director of student judicial affairs, and McCawley, associate director of admissions, at the beginning of a recent cabinet meeting. Abney, who formerly worked in the admissions office, has since left UCSC.

The three performed CPR and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation until paramedics arrived.
