Awards and Honors

Environmental studies awards go to five students

The Environmental Studies Department has announced the student recipients of several awards. They include the recipients of the Richard Cooley/Friends Foundation International Award:

  • Emel Orhun - $500 to cover transportation costs to work with a women's collective in Hautusco, Mexico, and develop a market for its coffee.
  • Andrew Nimmer - $500 to cover transportation costs to make a film on small-scale coffee growers in Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
  • Jennifer Orlick - $500 to cover transportation costs to attend hearings and conduct interviews with native communities in Alaska regarding salmon fishing windows along the Yukon-Kuskokwim River basin.

Recipients of the Surfrider Foundation/Skye Ksander Memorial Scholarship are:

  • Kevin Israel, who is studying environmental studies and Earth sciences, is interested in issues of beach access management and policy development; he received a $500 scholarship.
  • Diana Dority, a re-entry student with a major in environmental studies and a minor in marine biology, is working on coastal protection issues; she received a $500 scholarship.
