Openings in dance and CPR classes
The UCSC Recreation
Department has openings in upcoming classes in salsa dance,
Polynesian dance, West African traditional dance, and CPR. Sign
up in advance. Call 459-2806 to register over the phone with
a credit card or stop by the Recreation Office at the East Field
House.
Salsa Dance
Wednesdays, Jan. 19 - Feb. 16, Multipurpose Room, East Field
House, Class 1: 7 - 8:15 p.m., Class 2: 8:15 - 9:30 p.m. $25
Learn basic social dance patterns that can be used with a partner
in any social dance atmosphere. Dress comfortably, come alone,
with friends, or with a partner. Instructors Kara Willett and
Michael Mpyanga.
Polynesian Dance
Fridays, Jan. 21 - Feb. 25, 6:30 - 8 p.m., Dance Studio, East
Field House, $30.
Learn the sacred and festive dances of Hawaii and Tahiti! This
six-week class will introduce you to the graceful and strengthening
basics of hula and Tahitian as well as some Hawaiian and Tahitian
language and culture.
Instructor Lorraine Kinnamon has over 30 years experience and
has performed Polynesian dance around the world.
West African Traditional Dance
Mondays, Jan. 24 - March 7, 7:30 - 9 p.m., Multipurpose Room,
East Field House, $30.
Each class will start with dance warm-ups and then Mandjou will
teach you the traditional dances of her native land. Each dance
has its own rhythm and story, which will be accompanied on the
drums by Mandjou's brother, Salif Kone, and other drummers.
Each class will end with traditional songs and chants. Dress
in comfortable, loose clothing.
Instructor Mandjou Kone is originally from Mali, Burkina Faso.
CPR Heartsaver
Friday, Jan. 21, 6 - 8:30 p.m., OPERS Conference Room, $22 (instruction
& certification)
This class is intended to prepare individuals to provide care
for breathing and cardiac emergencies including performing adult,
child, and infant CPR, rescue breathing, accessing Emergency
Medical Services, and preventing disease transmission. American
Heart certification issued upon completion. Instructor Jim Novotny.
