City of Santa Cruz Resolution Honoring Chancellor
Greenwood
Whereas, M.R.C. Greenwood has served as Chancellor of the University
of California, Santa Cruz since July 1, 1996; and,
Whereas, as chief executive, Chancellor Greenwood oversees a major
public research university with combined undergraduate and graduate
enrollments of more than 14,000 students; and,
Whereas, UC Santa Cruz benefits this community with an annual economic
impact of more than $1 billion; and,
Whereas, Chancellor Greenwood has been an active member of the Santa
Cruz community and has served as a member of the Board of Directors
of Sutter Hospital, the Second Harvest Food Bank, and the United Way
of Santa Cruz County and was named "Woman of the Year" by
the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce; and,
Whereas, bringing the resources of University of California to our
local community has been a priority for Chancellor Greenwood, particularly
in the areas of support for education through the Educational Partnership
Center, the Seymour Marine Discovery Center, the New Teachers Center
and the Monterey Bay Educational Consortium; and,
Whereas, Chancellor Greenwood was a vocal supporter of the City's efforts
to secure the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary Visitors Center,
and,
Whereas, Chancellor Greenwood leaves an exceptional legacy for the
campus and the community, including the creation of the Baskin School
of Engineering, increased number of academic programs, expanded graduate
programs and new and vital research centers such as the Institute for
Advanced Feminist Research, the STEPS Institute for Innovation in Environmental
Research, the Center for Justice, Tolerance and Community, and the Center
for Ocean Health; and,
Whereas, Chancellor Greenwood is nationally and internationally recognized
as a leader in policy for science and science education; and
Whereas Chancellor Greenwood has worked closely with the City of Santa
Cruz on the Santa Cruz Chamber of Commerce's Economic Development Council
and on the UCSC Long Range Development Plan; and
Whereas Chancellor Greenwood has made a tremendous impact in communication
and cooperation between the City and the University because of her candor,
constructive and forward-looking approach; and
Whereas, Chancellor Greenwood has accepted a promotion to the position
of Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs for the entire
UC system;
Now therefore, I, Scott Kennedy, Mayor of the City of Santa Cruz, do
hereby proclaim Tuesday, March 23 as "M.R.C. Greenwood Day"
and encourage all citizens to join me in thanking Chancellor Greenwood
for her leadership and many contributions she has made to the people
and City of Santa Cruz, congratulating her for her many accomplishments
in the community, and wishing her well in her future endeavors.
