Scientists hunt for light flashes from extraterrestrials

A team of astronomers from several California institutions, including UCSC, is broadening the search for extraterrestrial intelligence with a new pulse-detection system capable of finding laser beacons from civilizations many light-years away. "It is a long shot, but what an exciting long shot, and what enormous implications for our view of our own place in the universe, said principal investigator Remington Stone, a research astronomer at UCSC's Lick Observatory."
